Kemp is an author, lecturer and consultant. He began his career working with the mobilization, maintenance, modernization and preparedness of the U.S. Army’s Industrial Production Base, which included oversight of procurement for engineering services and construction. After a 23-year military career, Kemp retired from the U.S. Army in 1973 as a lieutenant colonel, Regular Army Corps of Engineers. He earned his doctorate and MBA degrees from Arizona State University. From 1982 to 1995, Kemp taught university courses on international management, world trade, international business, production management and business strategies at Drake University. He was elected ISM (then NAPM) national president in 1997, and was awarded the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award in 2005.

Kemp is a longtime advocate for the supply management academic community. He was part of the effort that established ISM’s Academic Research Support Program, a grants program designed to help researchers and academicians at all phases of their careers.

The North American Research Symposium is scheduled for March 15-16, 2012 at the Phoenix/Chandler Hilton in Chandler, Arizona. Registration information for the event is available on the ISM website at http://www.ism.ws.

The John H. Hoagland Award was created to recognize and honor the contributions of outstanding academics and practitioners in supply management. Professor Hoagland taught supply management from 1952 to 1990 at Michigan State University to undergraduate, graduate and executive students. As one of the first academics in the field of purchasing and operations, he was instrumental in training doctoral students who would later deliver courses in purchasing at universities and colleges around the world. He also made strong contributions in research, focusing on business surveys to study leading economic indicators and business trends.
